Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua died today morning at Royal Marsden Hospital in London. He was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. He becomes the first governor to die while in office.

According to his brother Nderitu Gachagua, the governor died at 2.15 am Friday morning. Gachagua was elected on a GNU party ticket in 2013, alongside his deputy Wamathai Githaiga.  “He has left us after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. It is very sad for the family but we have accepted God’s will,” Rigathi Gachagua said.

He said burial arrangements are underway. The family is planning to bring the body back home for last rites. Mr Rigathi called his brother’s death a huge loss to the family and urged Kenyans to pray for them.

Prior to becoming governor, he was the Member of Parliament for Mathira constituency.
